Legend Open 2015
Came, saw, won. First competition for Jan and more trophies for DSKC. Jan Makuta represented the club in the prestigious competition organised every year by SKDUN GB (formerly FBSKUI). As the rest of the squad worked hard on tables or as judges, Jan was briefly released from his duties to enter kata and individual kumite. Showing true Budo spirit and with very little preparation that many karate athletes require and demand these days, Jan won 1st place in kata and 2nd in kumite in the senior 9th-4th kyu category.

Referees qualification course Poland September 2014
A referees and judges course conducted by sensei Colin Putt, SKDUN Chief Referee, was held in Bielsko-Biala on 12 - 14 September 2014. The group of 9 students of wide range of grades and previous experience worked hard over the 2 days to understand the complexities of kata and kumite judging and refereeing. The small number allowed for more in-depth discussions regarding the finer points of judgment. The course was complemented by a practical session of kata - Jion and Bassai Sho to underpin the theoretical knowledge. There was also a session with pre-set scenarios for the students to practice the various options available to a judging panel with regard to the rules. Big thanks go sensei Zbigniew Kowalski and his young students from karate club ‘Bushi’ for their acting skills in these scenarios to challenge the refereeing panel in their interpretations.
The course was concluded with a written examination with the practical assessment to be undertaken in the World Championships in Poland on 10-12 October. Results of the examinations will be announced at the next championships and will also be posted on the website.
There was also an evening session organised by the ‘Bushi’ club, with emphasis on kihon, kata and kumite training. The training covered the basics of the three Ks and included demonstration of advanced application of these basic principles for the more senior students.
